I teach a self-contained 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bridge class. My students are almost all of Dominican descent (I have one Puerto Rican and one Mexican this year!), and many of them are English language learners, so we have a fun mix of English and Spanish in my class. All of them qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. While they all struggle with reading (the average reading level in the class is 2nd grade), they are all so curious about the world around them. We have an area in the class where we write questions that come up during class that are related to the lesson but that we don't have time to investigate just then called the "parking lot." It fills up every day with questions such as "How much does it cost to run an election advertisement on TV?" During breaks the kids hop on the computers and earn "research points" looking up the answers. I am constantly impressed by their love of learning!
