My First Classroom Library

My Project

As it's my first year teaching, I'm still in the process of building an organized, accessible classroom library for my students. I have had many books donated, but need a safe place to store them all. By using book bins and labels, I can easily organize books by subject/interest to make the library accessible for all students. I plan to use existing milk crates in my classroom to create a bookshelf, putting the labeled bins inside for easy and organized student access. The cushions will allow students to have a soft place to sit during independent reading time, making it overall more warm and inviting. The hanging folders and zipper pouches will allow for me to easily file and organize corresponding shared reading and writing materials with the library.

Our classroom library is integral to fostering a love of reading and furthering early literacy skills.

By making it organized and accessible for students, they will be able to gain autonomy over their own book choices, understand different genres to discover their own interests. This will boost print and phonics skills, library concepts, and overall enjoyment and confidence in reading.
