Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My room is an adventure. We generally do long term, real world, programming and multimedia projects. I am a tough teacher. My students would probably say their toughest, but I love them and they know it. My 7th grade just built and programmed submarine robots and designed apps for Android.
My students are wonderful.
Every so often someone asks me what do I think of teaching. Immediately my students come to mind. They are generally well below the poverty level and come from quite difficult backgrounds, but when given the opportunity, they are amazing. That adage that all children can learn really does hold true. They come during lunch, before school, after school. I do everything in my power to give them what they need to be successful. They recognize that and do everything they can to reach my requirements. They are absolute gifts.
My Project
My computers are old. Some computers are 12 years old or older. I want to start teaching them Ruby, Python, Sony Vegas, and After Effects but they won't run on the computers. We are currently competing in a national app development contest, and my groups are all sharing one computer that can currently run the software. The students come in before and after school to work on their projects. I really need about 12 computers, but one more will help tremendously! I am excited about getting parts because it gives me the chance to have them help me build it. They will love it.
My goal for each of my students is for them to make it out of the poverty they live with every day.
I want to give them the greatest gift I can, my knowledge. I know that if given even half a chance, many of my students can and will be incredibly successful. I just need the tools to make it happen.
