This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is very exciting for my students, the majority of whom live in highly under-served communities, don't have access to technology, have way too many heavy books to carry in their backpacks, and want more experience learning basic computer skills generally and digital music skills specifically.

My students love the immediate feedback of digital music notation software - hitting play and hearing the score they just notated, watching a video of themselves performing in class, sharing a new best with their friends.

Technology is complementing their instrumental practice and making music class more exciting across the board.

My Project

Students are constantly losing, tearing, and disorganizing their music. A tablet can store thousands of pages of sheet music and display them in music-specialized viewing software (Mobilesheets app).

A tablet will let us use Noteflight composition software in class, allowing students to write music and play it back.

This lets students hear and understand how notation works and get immediate feedback about the music they write.

The app store has dozens of very interactive music production apps that let beginning musicians create and publish professional-sounding beats. The ease of use lets students focus on developing a message and arc through an entire song while they work to gain fundamentals with their actual instrument.

Students understand that performing takes practice. We will practice self-assessment by recording and watching class performances and give ourselves feedback.
