Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in an underprivileged community where the crime rate is one of the highest in Los Angeles. My students are faced with the crude reality of drugs, gangs, and violence at a very young age. I teach 3rd grade students (7-9 year olds) and in their short lived lives, they have witnessed gang shootings outside their homes, drug deals in their backyards, and even death in the courtyard. In a world of so much violence, my students are forced to grow up much too fast and with limited opportunities to escape. That is why I choose to teach them about worlds that are beyond their dreams while acknowledging the importance of their roots. This year I would like to teach my students music. I believe that music will contribute greatly to my student's education and personal lives. As it is part of California 3rd Grade Standards, music appreciation teaches about respect and appreciation of diversity, mathematic skills and science of sound. In the first trimester, we will introduce the general uses and diversity of music. "Where did it come from, how do different countries use music to express their individuality?" We will then follow with the basics of sound, and the different categories of instruments used to make music (wind, brass, string, and percussion). Lastly, we will learn to read basic notes and use recorders to learn to play simple tunes such as "The It's Bitsy Spider", and "Row, Row Your Boat". For this project, we need music sheets and recorders for each child so they can learn to read music and play basic notes.
