When you walk into my fourth grade classroom you will meet the eyes of 30 bright, bilingual children who in spite of economic disadvantages have been able to survive and succeed. You will meet Samantha who is always writing 2 page long stories and Luis who is starting to read chapter books on his own. You will meet Socorro who is starting to look up colleges and universities she would like to attend, and Evelyn who is learning the first 100 high frequency words. After just a few minutes of walking around, it is easy to see that although my students are in different stages of literacy, they are working hard towards excelling at their own pace. "That's a picture of my class on our end of the year challenge: a 6-mile hike on steep terrain most of the way. We did it!"
