My Project

At our school, we strive to empower international students and families and promote a spirit of empathy and inclusivity by bridging linguistic and cultural divides and celebrating diversity in our community. We support recently immigrated high school students as they transition to the U.S. by supporting them linguistically, academically, and emotionally. We implement an asset-based, individualized approach to instruction. We advocate for students and connect them to valuable resources and opportunities.

Having a class set of ukuleles for our students would allow us to implement music education and provide our students with the cognitive and psychological benefits of learning and expressing oneself through music.

In addition to developing our students' English and academic skills during their time at our school, we recognize the importance of providing our students with a well-rounded education that includes social-emotional learning, physical education, and, as is the case with this specific request, arts integration.

We have four instructors in our program to meet the needs of all students in the program (roughly 30). We are all ESOL, English as a Second Language instructors; however, we also bring in our own personal skills and passions to share with students and enhance their experiences. For example, one of our instructors is a painter and allows opportunities for her students to paint and create their own artwork.

I am a musician and play both guitar and ukulele. Although I love the guitar, ukuleles, due to their size and simplicity, are the logical choice for this request. During our 45-minute "Enrichment Time," I plan to teach ukulele lessons to all interested students on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. My ultimate dream would be for students to perform at an end-of-the-year event for the community. Thank you for your consideration!
