Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school has been around for nearly 50 years at this point. As the city around it has changed, so have the demographics of the students who attend it. During my tenure here we have housed almost 1000 students yearly who are primarily lower income families. Most students don't have access to a computer at home, although smart phones are becoming more prevalent, but are not a guarantee. Their access to technology is certainly limited by the income of their families.
My students are being introduced to new technology, software, and media everyday in my classroom.
This can of course be challenging to them, especially when the knowledge they need isn't immediately accessible and the technology requires some previous skills they don't have access to yet. But as they grow more familiar with the software, with the process, with the tools they start to really show amazing creativity and critical thinking. They have created things in my room that I myself could never have come up with. They have all the knowledge and creative ability to be successful in technology fields, but first they need the access and the practice. That is what my class provides to them.
My Project
My classes are constantly trying to create new things using technology, but as equipment gets older they have a harder time trying to match the vision in their heads.
These pieces of hardware will help them fulfill the ideas they dream up in their heads.
They'll finally be able to take high quality images and video around campus and in front of our green screen to add into their computer with a new Nikon camera. With the Huion tablet, they will be able to make intricate edits that they were previously unable to make with just a mouse and keyboard. And the iPad will open up opportunities for new applications that will allow the students to do more animation and provide an additional camera they can make their media with. These items will help them finally create the things they have been dreaming up in their minds.
My class is about teaching these students to be creative and come up with new things that they haven't been able to do before. It is also about critical thinking, and the need for them in the future to not only come up with new ideas, but also figure out how to make those ideas real. These skills can translate into any work place and career, and are vital to their future success. Having access to new hardware and technology and learning how to incorporate that into these routines will greatly increase their chances of advancement when they are placed in real world situations.
