This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Simple class packs of crayons and colored pencils come with just the basic rainbow colors. I have the students make several portraits throughout the year.

I would like to offer them a multitude of skin tones so that they can feel empowered, represented, and valued.

It's important for students to be able to take ownership of their own narrative. They need to see themselves in the work that they make, in the work they see in the halls, and in the stories they tell. I would like to have crayons and colored pencils readily available for my students to keep creating, imagining, and inventing.
