Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning to read and write can be a challenge for many children. Children with intellectual disabilities encounter more challenges in learning to read, write and learn basic mathematic skills. These children need multiple learning opportunities to help them learn basic literacy skills.

Children in third through fifth grade with mild/moderate intellectual disabilities attending elementary school in low-income neighborhoods do not have access to adequate learning materials.

It takes more time, and effort for these children to learn what comes naturally for their grade level peers, but they truly do love to learn. Music and games that teach math and language skills help them to remember, and lots of practice writing letters, words and numerals helps to reinforce the skills they are learning.

My Project

A durable CD/cassette player will allow students to listen to songs that helps them learn letters and sounds, listen to stories, and learn number concepts. Large pencils and a sharpener will allow them to practice writing. Literacy and Math Concept games such as "Game Show" will help them practice all the skills they are learning and hopefully will help them to generalize the skills they learn to the "real world".

Multiple learning opportunities and instruction that encompasses various learning modalities help children with mild/moderate intellectual disabilities to learn and generalize skills that come naturally to their peers.
