I teach seventh and eighth grade English in a severely under-resourced middle school in Brooklyn, NY. Eighty percent of students qualify for free lunch.
I serve primarily special education students, and one way that I differentiate in my classroom to meet the needs of a diverse community of learners is to provide my students with progress reports each week. These reports list the assignments that were turned in, the points received and any assignments that are still missing. With these reports, my students are held responsible for all of their work and are given the opportunity to make up missing assignments.
Progress reports provide my students with a level of accountability that is more common in high school and college, thus providing them with skills for success that go far beyond middle school. In addition, the reports foster a culture of achievement in my classroom rather than one that they commonly know - failure.
My students look forward to the reports each week, and I work hard to create them. The lack of school resources is beginning to become an obstacle to these reports and to the success of my students.
I need a new printer for the reports, as well as paper, ink for the printer, and a memory card. I print 60 reports each week from my personal computer and would appreciate your help in acquiring the necessary supplies to create a classroom of 60 achieving students.
