My students are in 4th grade and are in an advanced class that caters to students from out of the area. Many of my students are incredibly talented and come from a variety of backgrounds. Many come a long way and often forego breakfast before coming. I also have many students whose diet is affected by external influences so having food on hand and allowing them the dignity to eat when they finally feel hungry is huge.
Despite being academically gifted many of my students struggle with social lines and identifying boundaries and this has been made worse with COVID.
The majority of my 30 students are twice-exceptional and over half of my class are receive additional services. As such the students in my class communicate and learn differently. I strive to support students by teaching appropriate ways to respond, life skills, study skills, coping strategies, and learning habits. As is common with students in A.L.L they prefer to work independently and COVID has intensified this need. Many struggle with group work, working in loud environments and focusing. During COVID many were alone and returning to the classroom brings its challenges.
My Project
Due to COVID we can not have class headphones that students share. Some were able to buy their own but others were using the cheaper sets I bought with my own money and these have nearly all broken. Given the increasing rates of COVID and sickness in my classroom, it is essential everyone has headphones to access their learning.
Many students travel far to school without breakfast and some have medication that affects when they are hungry.
I want to create a breakfast bar for them to always have access to free food. The fridge will allow me to buy and store healthier food such as yogurts, milk for cereal, cheese sticks, and supplies for sandwiches if they forget lunch or need something on the way home. This will ensure that students are not just eating breakfast bars or sugary snacks.
The printer ink is for a printer that was so gratefully donated so students can have more autonomy over their work and print things in school to take home due to COVID exposures/quarantine or to print off work they did at home during their absences as many don't have access to computers or printers.
I have included sensory toys to support students as they learn to manage their emotions and learning styles because COVID has taken a toll on their mental health and social skills. The ear defender headphones are there to support students as they transition into the classroom. It is very overstimulating for a lot of them and causes stress and an inability to focus. Having two pairs right now they are the most utilized tool and the kids are begging me for more.
