My students are bright, sweet, and ALWAYS moving! It is easy to forget that 6-year-olds are made to move as much as they do, and they actually learn better when they are allowed to do so. My classroom has 9 boys to 4 girls, and the boys in particular have a penchant for rolling on the rug and falling out of their chairs during class! This is my first year in first grade, and I'm realizing I need a strategy that will allow them the movement they need while also keeping their focus on instruction. Tables and wobble chairs will allow my kiddos to get their wiggles out and research shows that flexible seating also helps students to focus. Flexible seating is all the rage in education right now because so many educators have recognized that young kids simply cannot sit still for any length of time and should not be expected to. My love bugs are certainly no exception!
My students regularly fall out of their chairs because they are wiggling and trying to get comfortable after sitting for a while. I get them up and moving as much as possible, but there are certain times they need to be sitting--basically any time they are writing, which we do in all subjects. I know this is hard on them, and wobble stools and tables will allow them to get their wiggles out stay comfortable while still writing and listening. I'm excited to see them learning more happily, and to know their little bodies and brains are getting more of what they need to thrive!
