The class sets of literature are going to enhance my teaching and classroom experience for my students in so many ways. We just started our first novel study with the book \"Number the Stars\" by Lois Lowry. We are just a couple of chapters in and my students are HOOKED! We started by studying the history of Denmark and World War II and the background of the author Lois Lowry. We have decided we also want to read her book \"The Giver\" once we finish this one.\r\n We are learning how to analyze texts while looking for specific things such as character traits. We began our study by studying the two main characters in the book. We have looked at their appearance, actions, thoughts, feelings, dialogue, and character traits. We will also be looking at cause and effect, inferencing, making connections, among many other important literacy skills. \r\n It was amazing to watch as my 5th graders followed along with their own book as I read aloud in chapter 1. I am hoping to allow my students a variety of ways to read through this book such as reading silently, with a partner, or just following as I read to them.
