My Students

I am the school counselor at a Title I school. I work to support our entire student population and strive to meet the unique needs of our kids. Many of our students have suffered some form of trauma. I know our youth are resilient, but I also know that they need support in learning how to effectively manage emotions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our small school in a big way and we now seek to support these students in some unique and powerful ways.

Our students are resilient, but they still need coaching and a safe space to emotionally regroup. When students receive the emotional support they need, they can make greater academic progress. They are worth the investment!

My Project

The funding of this project will provide sensory tools such as floor rockers, a weighted blanket, water tiles and emotional education books that will help support students as they learn “chill skills” to work through and calm those tough emotions. These tools will be available to all students at our school! Students will use these tools when they visit the school counselor for a short break when they are experiencing stress and anxiety and take a short break from their day. They will have the opportunity to experience the calm of a weighted blanket, step on the water tiles or rock while reading books designed to teach them about their emotions. Having students take a short break to ‘reset’ tough moments and calm themselves has been known to help students switch their brains back into “academic learning mode.”

Our goal is to create a space where students can comfortably and safely work through tough emotions by practicing “chill skills.”
