Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I walked into my classroom, looked around and saw a bullet hole in one of my class windows. When I asked another teacher about it, he just laughed and told me not to worry, saying; “just be aware of what’s around you and don’t walk to your car alone if it's dark.” I'm a first year teacher in a third grade classroom in California. The school is 92% socioeconomic disadvantaged, and 62% of its students are English learners. We are in desperate need of a good class library!

While looking around my new classroom this morning I realized that the previous teacher took everything! Getting books for the student library is the first step. Reading is very important to these students. Many have little or no books in their home and come from very high poverty.

The solution starts with books! Having books to read and cozy chairs to sit in will enhance my students reading and comprehension skills. Giving them these skills will ensure that they are one of the few students that will graduate high school and go on to college!

You can help these children feel safe and cared for by donating these items to our class. Its not often that these children get to open a nice new book that’s not torn or crumpled! Learning to read, and enjoying it along the way, is their ticket out of poverty and into college!
