This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Books provide students power. Power over their education and power to open up their world to new perspectives, adventures and wanderlust. I love when my students share the giddy excitement of diving into a new, captivating book. In the current culture of our world, I feel it is especially important to expose students to a variety of diverse cultures and perspectives to teach understanding and use these books to spark meaningful conversations in the classroom. My students are eager to be captivated by the stories that exist amongst a rich and diverse library. They are curious, motivated and creative. Having a diverse library will support my English Language Learners by providing them with multiple opportunities to experience content at their individualized levels. Many of my students do not have access to diverse books at home and rely on the school/class library. My goal is to make provide an assorted combination of books within the walls of my classroom that will challenge and inspire a deep love for reading in my students.

My Project

By providing students access to diverse books in the classroom, I am hoping to increase student motivation, engagement, and achievement and help students become critical thinkers, analytical readers, and informed citizens. The books in my library will encourage students to select stories that are a good fit for their unique preferences and hopefully challenge them to experiment with new genres. I have hand picked a collection of books that I believe will reflect diverse perspectives for students such as "Inside Out and Back Again" by Thannha Lai and "Slyvia and Akki" by Wilifred Conkling. I have spent time researching diverse books and collecting titles to address what I believe to be the needs, interests and concerns of my students.
