They come grab a book and take it back to their seats. \r\n\r\nReading is more exciting now, especially since there are many biographies about people in the classroom. I have a lot of students coming up and asking can I take this? I am happy to tell them, yes, put it in your book bag to read! \r\n\r\nThe classroom in 2nd Grade has now a multitude of various books that were thoughtfully donated by Donors Choose Supporters. Having just 15 paper copies (half the class) of A Long Walk to Water and Ghost has dramatically increased student interest and engagement. Students were already intrigued by these incredible stories, but to be able to hold a paper book rather than scroll on a device (as students spend much of their day) creates a different reading experience. Eventually, I am hoping to accumulate enough books for each child to have their own set. With the variety of titles obtained through your generosity (A Long Walk to Water, Ghost, and The Breadwinner), students are exposed to diverse characters and scenarios that are relevant to us today. With these texts, we can analyze an author's purpose of a particular paragraph or section, analyze characters, discuss theme or central idea, and compare and contrast these texts with other texts or stories. With the physical books in our classroom, students can now pick up a book any time to revisit our reading session or to answer literature response questions. We are also able to meet in Book Clubs with these texts, providing a book for each child, so they can discuss their understanding of the literature in small groups. \r\n\r\nIn addition to the texts you provided us, we also received calculators to help make our math calculations more efficient. For lessons that are not assessing students' abilities to calculate numbers, the calculators come in handy to quickly compute an answer. For example, when we are learning about Mean Absolute Deviation, it would take tens of minutes in order to calculate the means of twenty values and then determine the mean of the distances of each value from the mean. Another example is when we are calculating surface area or volume of 3D figures and we are assessing whether students are able to follow the correct formulas and steps rather than the calculation of the dimensions.These are just two of many math skills that make having calculators for at least half the class more efficient. \r\n\r\nI can't thank you enough for your generosity as the above would not have been possible without your contribution. Thank you for your support of my students and their educational journey!","fullyFundedDate":1742919907867,"projectUrl":"project/begging-for-book-sets/9167104/","projectTitle":"Begging for Book Sets","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mendoza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lisamendoza"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_104939","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":923,"numTeachers":44,"percentFrplEligible":35,"percentAsian":19,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":9,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":51,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"21.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":86.2,"schoolId":104939,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Enrique S Camarena Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Enrique S Camarena Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/chula-vista-elementary-school-district/camarena-elementary/104939"}
