My Students
The students and families at our school are amazing! They are hard working, creative and love to move. As many communities in our city, our demographics have changed tremendously in the 16 years I have taught PE at this school. I teach AK - 5th graders, and each year the needs are greater than ever for support for our kiddos. School district finances tend to support the academic side of the school day.
Supporting the physical and mental health of our kiddos should go hand in hand with the success of our students in the classroom, and movement seems to be a missing part of a student's day.
Researchers all over the world are linking exercise to increase brain focus, less anxiety, and greater motivation to learn without the side effects of drugs. This project would use aerobic exercise equipment to help students begin their day with exercise to SPARK the true mind set for learning. Help us move to learn!
My Project
The idea for this project began with the research of John Ratey, MD and his book titled SPARK; The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. As the PE Teacher in the building, it is my desire to get as much movement within the school day as possible. Upon reading this book, I was excited to learn the effect exercise has on the brain when it comes to learning, motivation and behavior of kids.
Through this project, my goal is to provide two full body rowing machines that can quickly raise heart rates, blood flow and help kids start their day with brains ready to learn.
This is my first step in providing students in need to start their day with exercise to better focus their learning, set positive behavior and motivate them to learn. Thanks for all your help!
