My students need travel guide books and art supplies to plan a month long vacation to a Latin American country and to create scrapbook pages of the trip.
My students are inner-city high school students who thrive at learning about other cultures, as well as comparing theirs to the target culture I teach them. My students are motivated, using their creativity, in and outside of the classroom.
They are preprofessional artists and dedicate a good portion of their school day practicing their art-form.
They appreciate and learn faster when academic teachers incorporate art into the classroom. The students are happier when they use bright colors and get to personalize their notes.
My Project
Students will watch the movie "Motorcycle Diaries" and become inspired to travel throughout Latin America and Spain. They will travel as group members. Groups will plan out their trip visiting one to three countries in ten weeks, an entire summer vacation. They will research places to go and things to do by using these requested Lonely Planet guides. Some requested country books include Puerto Rico, Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Argentina, Spain, and Chile & Easter Island. They will print out pictures of the places using the internet.
In cooperative groups, they will create scrapbook pages of their trip using specified grammar points they have learned in class.
I'm also asking for School Smart Poster Boards and variety of paper. The projects will be hung around the classroom so that groups may share with one another.
