My Project

I teach kindergarten-5th grade small group reading intervention in Raleigh, NC. My school is a Title I school. My students may have some difficulties in reading that require focused strategies that we use to make improvements so they become strong, independent readers. They are hard workers who enjoy coming to reading club, setting short-term reading goals, and earning rewards for attaining these goals.

The reading intervention programs that I use include a motivational system that rewards students for showing signs of effort and improvement towards an independent reading goal.

My students set short-term reading goals, track and document their progress, and are rewarded for reaching a goal. Learning to set attainable goals is a skill necessary for long-term success. It teaches personal skills such as organization, planning, and time management that will carry over into other aspects of academics. The rewards help my students stay motivated to reach a goal and set new ones. The students helped to pick items they would like as rewards which increase their motivation. The items in this project are geared towards my upper grade students who have requested these specific items.
