Although many students will benefit from standing desks, one of our students “Eddie,” has written you a letter explaining why he believes we need standing desks. Eddie is one of our 3rd grade students that has Autism. Almost all day, he stands and learns. He was so excited when he heard about standing desks that he wanted to share his thoughts with all of you. This letter was written completely on his own.
I would like to tell you why Blasdell Elementary School should get standing desks.
(According to all the students in the school, we’ll need approximately 500 standing desks.) In case we want to stand and do our work without leaning on our desks, the standing desk is the perfect idea. There is a proven fact that if kids can move around while they’re learning, they can learn better. The standing desk will help with this because you can use the bar below the desk to move your foot around. That is why Blasdell Elementary School should have standing desks.
My Project
We have a very unique population Blasdell Elementary. We are a Title I school comprised of multiple classrooms that have students with special needs as well as a growing population of ENL (English as a New Language) students. We have multiple 8-1-1 self-contained classrooms as well as classrooms who service students with severe learning disabilities and children on the autism spectrum. There are certainly a variety of needs, but every teacher and staff member embraces the challenge of teaching a diverse group of students and is dedicated to helping each and every child.
One area of concern that seems to be increasing over the years is our students’ ability to sustain their attention for an extended period of time.
Many find it extremely difficult staying in their seat to work for longer than a few minutes. They need to get up, take a break, or move their bodies often. After brainstorming and researching multiple strategies on what will help them become more successful, I discovered standing desks. The research doesn’t lie! Giving the students the opportunity to stand and work increases their success dramatically. We have so many students that would benefit from these innovative desks.
