We have a very unique population Blasdell Elemenrary. We are a Title I school comprised of multiple classrooms that have students with special needs as well as a growing population of ENL (English as a New Language) students. We have multiple 8-1-1 self-contained classrooms as well as classrooms who service students with severe learning disabilities and children on the autism spectrum. There are certainly a variety of needs, but every teacher and staff member embraces the challenge of teaching a diverse group of students and is dedicated to helping each and every child. One area of concern that seems to be increasing over the years is our students’ ability to sustain their attention for an extended period of time. Many find it extremely difficult staying in their seat to work for longer than a few minutes. They need to get up, take a break, or move their bodies often. After brainstorming and researching multiple strategies on what will help them become more successful, I discovered standing desks. The research doesn’t lie! Giving the students the opportunity to stand and work increases their success dramatically. We have so many students that would benefit from these innovative desks.
