I am a second grade teacher at a public school in Antioch, California. As a first year teacher, I knew it was going to be a difficult job, and I am prepared to do whatever I can to give my students the tools needed to learn. The children in my class have had a difficult year: they did not have a permanent teacher for the first five weeks of school; eighteen of the nineteen kids were new to the community, with no sense of belonging; and last week, vandals destroyed everything in the room (white board, overhead projector, TV, intercom, phone etc...) Three of the four classroom walls open up which leaves little room to hang anything, and now that sections of the white board are destroyed, there is very little space to write. As a new teacher in a low socio-economic community I have little support from the families and have spent an enormous amount of time and hundreds of dollars just getting the room set up. The children not only need daily direct instruction but need to remember this instruction. To help all the children visualize the lesson and to realize the importance of words, they must see things in print in their environment. My English Language learners, as well as the rest of my students, would have a greater rate of reading and writing success if they could be given hands-on language arts instruction, such as shared writings. I try to do this, but it's difficult because of the limited writing space. To enhance their learning, a supply of chart paper as well as an adjustable easel to place it on would create a valuable piece to successful teaching and learning. The children would be able to reach the paper and engage in active learning and I could successfully facilitate the learning process. Thank you for helping us make learning fun!
