More Winter Clothes for Our Newcomer Students

Help me give my students hats, gloves, and scarves for their first Indiana winter.

This project expired on May 5, 2022.

My Students

My scholars are IB students at an urban inner-city school. Our curriculum is both diverse and rigorous. We strive to provide high-quality education to students from all walks of life.

My students are special because of their universal drive to achieve rigorous academic goals for college and beyond.

They are public school students who have opted into an extremely demanding college preparatory program.

My classroom is project-based, and scholars lead their own learning with guidance and examples from both me and other professionals in the field. Fulfilling goals set by them, for them, helps my scholars learn the importance of independence and free-thinking.

About 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price meals, and our student body represents a diverse group of black, white, Latino, multiracial, and Asian students from all neighborhoods of a large city in Indiana.

My Project

Since early fall, Indiana's Camp Atterbury has been home to nearly 7,000 Afghan evacuees fleeing the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. After a few incredibly trying months, it is now time for these families to build their permanent homes in the United States. Indianapolis Public Schools are projected to receive several hundred new students who are Afghan evacuees, and about 80 of them are projected to enroll at our high school early in the spring semester.

I have requested hats, gloves, and scarves so that students can stay warm during their first Indiana winter.

Our first group of Afghan students has arrived and received orientation. Yesterday, we distributed winter clothes to them from a previous DonorsChoose.org project. We allowed students to take hats, gloves, and scarves for themselves and for their families, and we were, therefore, able to gauge that the need is greater than we had originally anticipated. As we anticipate the arrival of about 70 more students, we are hoping to make a purchase of more winter clothes to distribute. Thank you for your generosity in helping us to keep our students warm this winter!
