My Students

I teach two different classes each day; one class of second graders and one class of third graders. They are a great group of students who truly enjoy school. They love being read to and especially love learning about people from history.

My students attend a neighborhood school with more than 50 countries represented in our student population.

The students come from extremely diverse backgrounds. Many of them are refugees or immigrants. My students have a great thirst for knowledge. They really love learning about history and the world around them. Many of my students gravitate toward the nonfiction section of my classroom library and they love studying about famous people.

My Project

The recent pandemic has taken such a toll on my students, both emotionally and academically. With remote learning, they have been home for a year with few or no books. Now that we are back to in-person instruction, I can see the deficit as students struggle to read.

Graphic novels are great because they foster the love of books and improve literacy skills at the same time!

Many of these books concern issues that students are coping with in their own lives! Some have won many prestigious children's book awards.

My students' faces lit up when I showed them Jerry Croft's Newberry Award winning book, New Kid. Please help me make exciting graphic novels accessible to my students by putting them in my classroom library!
