More Students, More Equipment, More Active Learners
My students need 3 - 30 pound bars that have a smaller diameter grip, 6 pairs of safety bar clamps to keep the weights in place, and 3 sets of durable bumper plates.
My students are passionate about exploring the wide variety of weight training. My students are just as enthusiastic about improving their athletic ability and body composition, as they are about their increased confidence and cognitive abilities thanks to their incredible effort and focus in class.
We are a high poverty school, with more than 50% of our students on free or reduced lunch.
In an urban/suburban setting, exposing students to as many activities as possible will only increase the achievement of our kids. Our kids are finally getting to have the same opportunities as other local middle schools, where they are challenged physically and mentally through a variety of activities. My students range from the matured physical athlete competing at a high level in multiple activities to the student who pushes their body every day to release the stresses of their everyday life and reach their goals of improved health for a life time of healthy activity which has a positive impact on all student's confidence.
My Project
My goal everyday is to get as many students moving at the same time for the whole 35 minute class period as I can. Having these extra bars will allow more students to have an opportunity to perform the lifts from that day. These durable bars are specific for this age group. They are lighter, only weighing 30 pounds rather than the normal 45 pound bars that were handed down to us by the high school. The bars also have a smaller diameter grip for students who are not as developed physically yet so they can perform the lifts safely with proper technique. Also thanks to the new snap clamps that are easy for any student to get on and off, the new bumper plates will be safely secured on the bars so that everyone in the class is in a safe environment, which is priority number one.
Our numbers in the PE classes go up weekly due to new students transferring in regularly.
For safety reasons, with the shortage of equipment and lack of space the weight lifting class has a cap of 28 students while the other classes are piling up to enrollments of 40's and 50's. To avoid this issue next year I'm asking for more equipment to add to my bigger classroom so we can level out our numbers more evenly across all PE classes. With this action we'll have more 1 on 1 student interactions.
