My Project

In my classroom, we have an incredible opportunity to dig deeper into grade-level content, providing a necessary challenge to our gifted and talented students. Over the past few years, I have encountered a problem: I only have one copy of many of the books we use each year.

Providing each student or group of students a physical copy of the books we read will increase their independence in manipulating a text, and, at the same time, make group collaboration easier.

I am requesting sets of "Multicultural Fairy Tales" for my third graders. These sets of books contain versions of well-known fairy tales from different cultures. They will allow us to examine Fairy Tale elements and compare the unique differences each culture brings to the story. Providing options to my students helps to increase their engagement with the text.

In the spring, our 5th graders study social change through athletes. The book "Above the Rim: How Elgin Baylor Changed Basketball" is one of my favorite books for this unit because it flawlessly combines biographical events of Elgin Baylor's life with figurative language in a way that creates a truly artful story. It would be so beneficial for each student to have their own copy to reference and study for this unit.

The last book I'm requesting is "Hailstones and Halibut Bones: Adventures in Poetry and Color." This is a great book when introducing the analysis and writing of poetry to younger students.

This project would provide my student with their own copies of books for each lesson. The impact this would make on their learning is undeniable.
