My school is set in a small rural community. Farming and school sports are my students' lives. Last year I had several students say that the reason they don't like English class is because the books are old and boring. They expressed that if they were given more options and freedom in picking what to read they would like it more.
When they learned that they would be spending 8th grade self selecting books that interested them, they got excited.
Many of my students come from families who can't afford to travel or leave their farms. Books are a way to travel and expand your world even if you aren't able to leave your hometown.
My Project
According to Scholastic, “Experts claim a classroom library should have at least 20 books per student, so a typical class of 28 students would have a classroom library of close to 600 books...to match books to the many different readers in their classrooms.” Right now our classroom is far short of that goal.
I want students to have have books at their fingertips in hopes that this will foster in them a love of reading.
Many of these students have claimed they haven’t ever found a book they liked. Your donation would provide my students with greater access to stories that inspire them and hopefully turn them into life-long readers.
