My Project

Our middle-grade book club needs books to read that they like, and I want to encourage their excitement. If we have a variety of titles predicted by library journals and libraries to be the top contenders for the coveted Newbery Award, we can rotate them, read them individually, bracket them, and debate their merits orally and in writing.

Each year, the American Library Association bestows the Newbery Award on the book of lasting quality, and our students can be involved in a similar process.

Our students are readers, and getting the chance to read the newest, best books is a treat for them.

Exposing students to the best of the best and talking about what they like or dislike about the book activates their skills in analysis, but also helps them appreciate good writing and a good story.
