Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am passionate about teaching student artists through an open studio, choice based TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) format. With this approach, students are given the opportunity to take ownership over their learning in art. They self-select materials and project themes based on their own personal skills, interests, and passions, and I help facilitate their creative process. My ultimate goals for every student in my class are to learn that Art is everywhere, and to learn that everyone can be an artist. In other words, I want my students to gain access to the capacity to think creatively by finding a way to engage with art that meets their personal needs, strengths and challenges. Students respond to this approach with increased motivation and are learning and discovering things I never could have imagined!
My students are always excited to discover new ways to make meaningful art.
There are a variety of studio centers open to them at all times, and they have the opportunity to build skills in the areas that are most interesting to them. I am always looking for new ways to expand the possibilities of our open studio classroom.
My Project
Students have access to painting materials in our classroom art studio, these new materials will enable them to continue to experiment with painting media they may not normally have access to. Tempera Sticks and Semi Moist Tempera Cakes can create a vibrant, smooth base layer of color which students can build. Then they can take their paintings to the next level with more control of application and greater accuracy in including details with the paint markers.
A variety of painting materials increases the possibilities for students to expand their thinking and creativity.
They will be able to experiment with mixed media applications as well and learn to express ideas and emotions in layers of paint!
