Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a low income neighborhood with high poverty and crime. Our school has a 90% poverty rate. Unfortunately they have very little educational resources at home and at school. My students love to read and need more access to grade level appropriate and high interest materials within the classroom.
Our school has little to no funds this year for basic classroom and student supplies.
These students need more access to literacy materials in school and at home.
My Project
The Scholastic Scope monthly magazines are very popular among my students due to their high interest content. They benefit my students since the magazine articles and activities cover the common core standards my students must learn in 8th grade. The magazine curriculum additionally focuses on vocabulary which is often a weakness for my students due to their ELL background.
My students look forward to receiving these monthly magazines since they foster a love and interest in reading for many of my students.
They look forward to the current news articles, visuals, and historical stories. The magazine subscription also includes educational videos related to the article which helps bring to life what they have read in class.
