Mini Biospheres: Building Self-Sustaining Ecosystems in Science

Help me give my students terrarium kits a plant grow light, and mini-succulent plants.

My Project

Our next unit begins January 8th , 2026 and my 6th grade science students will be learning about Earth’s spheres (geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere) and how these systems interact to support life. This project will allow students to help build mini biospheres using real plants and sealed terrariums, transforming abstract science concepts into meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.

By constructing and observing models of a self-sustaining closed ecosystem, students will observe how water cycles, air, soil, and living organisms work together over time just like on Earth.

To make this project possible, we are requesting two PYEF Crafts DIY Terrarium Kits which includes glass terrariums, materials for drainage and soil layers, and tools to build a closed ecosystem. We also need live succulent low-maintenance plants ideal for closed terrariums and student use. The LBW Desk Grow Light (Full Spectrum Plant Light)

provides consistent light to model sunlight and support plant growth indoors. These materials will allow students to safely and successfully create ecosystems that can last for weeks or even months.

Many of my students learn best by doing, not just listening. This project gives them ownership of their learning and makes science visible, tangible, and exciting. Watching their biosphere thrive helps students understand that Earth works the same way, through balance and interaction. With your help, this hands-on experience will spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and help students see themselves as real scientists.
