My students range from 6th to 8th grade and have a wide variety of abilities and needs. All of my students are on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) which help to ensure that they reach their highest level of achievement.
Although my students have challenges which make traditional schooling more difficult, my classroom offers a place where they can relax and feel empowered!
In addition to working on traditional academic skills, my students also learn and work on social, emotional, and life skills in my class. These skills will help them not only in middle school, but throughout their lives.
Although my students have diverse needs, they all need direct instruction and practice in emotional regulation. In my class, students practice many mindful behaviors including yoga, breathing, and recognizing their emotions.
They enjoy learning about keeping their minds and bodies calm, and this project will provide more resources to help student practice calm and mindful behaviors.
The yoga mats will give my students a visual representation of their space during their daily yoga recharge, and will offer a clean place to relax. The fidgets will help students to relieve stress, frustration, anxiety and allow them to refocus and maintain attention on academic tasks. "A Handful of Quiet" will help build students awareness of their own emotional regulation, and help them to develop more strategies to improve their emotional regulation.
