This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Music technology is a new program at my high school, and the students are loving it! The district provided the computers, and I have been working to fund the remaining equipment needed to create a functional music workstation for each student. Learning music through music technology supports students in their academic development, enriches their overall academic experience, and provides opportunities for social connections as well as individual expression.

Study after study has demonstrated the strong connection between music and academic success and the social and emotional health of students.

Projects in music technology include composing original music, creating and mixing samples, recording, editing, and composing music for podcasts, composing original video game music, and composing scores for short films and videos.

All of the projects provide the opportunity for collaboration, individual expression, and cross-curricular connections, enriching students' school experience and connection to the community. These projects also help students strengthen their technical skills in creative applications that will help them succeed in school, college, and their future careers.

I currently do not have enough MIDI keyboards and headphones for each workstation. Students who want to record original music need to wait for a keyboard to become available. I only have eight sets of quality headphones. The students notice the difference and are always disappointed when they don't get to class first to get the "good ones." The equipment in this grant will get me one step closer to providing each student with a quality music workstation.
