Middle School Selfies: The All About Me Project

My students need a classroom camera and a drying rack.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazingly create and curious. My budget is unfortunately extremely limited. I have bought a lot of supplies for my students with my own money. I recently purchased a laptop and Photoshop for my students to use in the classroom. But there is a limit as to how much I can provide.

I teach in a middle school and work with approximately 350 students per year.

My annual budget provides me with approximately $2.25 per student per year. My students love art and appreciate the opportunity to work with a variety of materials. Unfortunately, a high percentage of my students come from households that have an annual income below the poverty level. The money to provide my students with the resources enjoyed by surrounding communities, is just not there. I'm trying, in my way, to level the playing field a bit.

My Project

A large percentage of my students are recent immigrants or the children of recent immigrants. I want my students to explore their heritage and create art that speaks to an appreciation of their varied and rich cultural experiences. I want my students to use this camera to connect with family and self. We will then mix mediums and project these photographs to create large paintings. The use of a drying rack will make this possible. Right now, when we paint, we have to spread the paintings around the classroom to dry. This drastically limits our ability to create meaningful work.

My middle school students are amazingly creative.

Unfortunately, we have very little access to technology in our building. Creating images digitally, and using contemporary, software will help keep our students viable in a rapidly changing technological world. My students will shine if I give them this opportunity.
