My Students

The students I teach have obstacles that they have to overcome. First, many come from very low-income families.

We also have some that experience homelessness from time to time.

The majority of students in my class and school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Second, many students have IEPs. Most have learning disabilities in math, reading, and writing while a few others have emotional needs and some have other health impairments. They struggle daily with the curriculum that is being taught, even with modifications.

My Project

One hundred percent of our middle school students are offered free breakfast and free lunch everyday. While this is great, for some this is not enough. They are great kids but often get hungry during the day. I teach kids who might struggle academically, emotionally or socially. By having a snack to offer them it often helps them to continue to focus in class or to reset if they are struggling to calm down. I also can offer snacks for kids to take home over long weekends and holiday breaks.
