Microscopes To Magnify Students' Experiences

My students need five microscopes and five sets of prepared slides.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a place where curiosity is cultivated & creativity is fostered. I strive to make all lessons interesting and engaging so students become more curious about the world and crave even more knowledge. The world's greatest inventions and advancements all started with curiosity!

My students are sponges that are eager to absorb more knowledge.

For the majority of my students, science is their favorite subject because it is intriguing and filled with opportunities for hands-on learning such as labs, experiments, and so forth. Our school is a Title 1 school that is in an at-risk and low income neighborhood. My students come from diverse backgrounds; the majority are Hispanic or African American. A little less than half of my students are limited language proficient and exceptional education students. Many come from single parent households or families that are in transition. We work very hard to overcome all of these challenges. My students have the exact same eagerness to learn science as their peers in more affluent schools. Unfortunately, the school's resources and technology are very limited. The resources and technology the school does have are either very outdated (think 1975!) or not functioning. My students have the enthusiasm & will, we need the way!

My Project

My students live in a high-tech world, but the available technology is stuck in 1975. The few microscopes available are either very outdated or broken. The few microscopes that are functional must be shared with 22 students at a time! With this project, my students' learning experience will transition from lackluster to more engaging, hands-on experiences. I am requesting your help in purchasing five microscopes and five sets of prepared slides that will be used throughout the year (year after year!) for science inquires. Our classroom is arranged with five lab groups that seat four to five students; I would love for each lab group to have their own microscope and prepared slides so every student is given the chance to use a microscope. Through the high-powered microscopes and prepared cell slides in my project, students will be able to really see cells and specimen with all the details words and pictures are unable show. My students’ learning experiences will be literally magnified!

My students are on a very fine line between achievement & failure.

Our eighth grade graduations are packed. Many parents & relatives attend because they think this will be the only graduation for their children. It upsets me that the bar is set so low, which is why I set my expectations high. I will do everything to ignite my students’ curiosity for learning science. Regardless of my students’ background and demographics, igniting curiosity will lead my students to a path filled with success.
