Students are making their first sounds in beginning band and learning how to be independent musicians. That comes with a lot of trial and error and, unfortunately, some broken reeds. The good news is, thanks to your donations, we have plenty of reeds to spare!\r\n I believe that learning to take care of our things is an important part of students maturing. The swabs, mouthpiece, and reeds contribute to that goal every day in class. The students always marvel that my personal clarinet and many of our school instruments are 25 years old. Our dedication to caring for the instruments properly sure is paying off! We can only hope these lessons in being mindful and careful with our things translates into their lives in general as well.","fullyFundedDate":1758832672394,"projectUrl":"project/reeds-life/9675953/","projectTitle":"Reeds = Life","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Thompson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8097867_orig.jpg?crop=1932,1932,x0,y566&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1632594508993","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8097867"},{"teacherId":8097867,"projectId":9278449,"letterContent":"Week 1 and we were on our feet, already making music! Your donations made it a smooth start with all the resources we needed at our fingertips.\r\n\r\nThe results of your generosity were boundless! The percussionists were able to step right into drumming with their ears protected. Every student who wanted to try clarinet or saxophone had a fresh reed. All the trumpets had the correct type of mute for the trio section of the march, all the saxophones were properly supported with comfortable neck straps, and the flutes were held with ease thanks to the supplies you helped provide.\r\n\r\nThese supplies might seem trivial, but the right tools make every student more successful. If a student has to suffer with an uncomfortable neck strap on a saxophone (or tries to go without) their willingness to play the instrument dwindles at exactly the time it needs to surge! A trumpet player without a mute, or with the wrong type of mute, stands out like a sore thumb, but telling a student not to play that part because they can't afford a mute dampens their enthusiasm and makes them self-conscious. A flute player who can't properly hold their flute is often easily frustrated and risks falling into poor habits that can cause physical pain. If your instrument hurts you, you're less likely to want to practice it. So, though these bits and bobs may seem trivial, they often mean the difference between continuing to learn an instrument or quitting before mastery has even begun. \r\n\r\nLittle things add up. One of the first things recommended to young players to improve their sound is upgrading their mouthpiece, ligature, and reeds. These small pieces make a big difference in sound! Keeping that equipment in good working order is not only essential, but helps keep the instrument repair bills down. Clean instruments also sound better (no gunk fuzzying the sound!). In addition, learning to care for their things is an important lesson for middle schoolers.\r\n All of these items will ensure the best sound on instruments and help them last longer, which makes their teacher's workload more manageable. Every ounce of my attention that can go towards students instead of attempting a repair during class, fundraising for repairs, or wasted class time spent on fixing tone when the proper reed and ligature would be an instant fix, means more learning for students. Thank you for the gift of extra time to spend teaching instead of on these other tasks.","fullyFundedDate":1739590022890,"projectUrl":"project/greased-up-cleaned-up-ready-to-play/9108641/","projectTitle":"Greased Up, Cleaned Up, Ready to Play!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Thompson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8097867_orig.jpg?crop=1932,1932,x0,y566&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1632594508993","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8097867"},{"teacherId":8097867,"projectId":9002568,"letterContent":"When I started teaching at my school, the world was different. Students should not be limited in their growth because their parents are struggling financially.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, when a student needs materials for class like a new reed, I can provide one so that not even a minute of learning time is wasted.
