Help me give my students micro:bit controllers for engineering. We can use these microcontrollers and associated products for some amazing in-class projects.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I have recently started using the micro:bit controllers for teaching basic coding structures. Micro:bit creates an easily-accessible, yet amazingly functional coding environment that allows students to see programming success within the first few minutes. The graphical user interface and block-style programming appeals to beginning programmers and allows students to learn coding structures such as loops, logic, and functions without getting worried about syntax. For more advanced programmers, the Python programming interface brings even more functionality.
I will use these materials for teaching coding to sophomore-level students and to provide an easy-to-use, powerful microcontroller environment to senior-level students for their year-long design projects.
My planned projects include everything from simple games to more complex environments that use sensors for humidity, temperature, sound, light, and others to drive motors, solenoids, and other output devices. The micro:bit controller with the advanced sensor packages will allow me to expand the capabilities and projects and to challenge my students to come up with new, inventive projects.
By bringing in a system that can be easily learned by my novice coders, I can expand the participation in coding projects. I can also use the more advanced features to challenge my advanced coders into creating new and exciting projects.
