Our classroom is filled with inquisitive energy and laughter. There is a wonderful balance of high academic standards mixed with dancing, community building, and of course the most important thing in kindergarten, play.
My students are kind to one another and because of the diverse nature of their peers' needs, they support each other eagerly and thoughtfully.
We function as a family, a home away from homes that are sometimes filled with trauma, uncertainty, and loss. We do not allow put-downs in our class community, thereby creating a safe and sacred learning environment that supports risk-taking, perseverance, and kicking in your best effort in everything you do. My young scholars approach learning tasks with a great deal of gusto and they do not take anything for granted. There is no time for boredom in our classroom; we keep the learning moving! Our curricula are filled with age-appropriate studies of physics and balance, sculptors, ecology, awareness of cultures and issues of social justice. Our school was founded by parent and community grassroots activists who dreamed of better opportunities for children of color.
My Project
Unfortunately, this year we do not have a classroom budget due to cuts and delays in spending federal funds. Our morning meetings are a critically important part of each day, as we set up the learning for the day and review important skills and knowledge.
We need a chart pad to record our daily morning messages, a bluetooth speaker to help us play fun dance music for movement (our speaker recently broke down), durable chart paper to record poems that we will revisit over time and a durable pocket chart for displaying cards and sentence strips for easy viewing.
(We also threw some new playdoh in there, as we always need fresh tubs of our favorite learning material!)
