Mentor Texts Make for Meaningful Learning

My Students

My class is a group of third students who come from all around the world. It is such a unique environment in that everyone respects and supports each other.

The school is a Title One School located in the city of Philadelphia.

All children receive free breakfast and lunch.

The parents have been very supportive of all my initiatives through the years & through this project, I am hoping to give back to them.

Many of the children don't come to school with the necessary materials to keep them focused and organized.

My Project

I am requesting mentor texts to be read aloud during the literacy block. The use of mentor texts help the children so they can capture a better understanding of figurative language within the context of a picture book instead of using worksheets.

Mentor texts give students concrete examples of a writing skill in action!

I am hoping that through these read-alouds my students will enhance their reading and writing skills. The children will be able to respond to the literature and to create their own elaborate style by listening to the author's craft. There is nothing like learning through example!
