This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Special Education teacher and my students have learning disabilities, which means they are identified as having processing difficulties in the information given to them in auditory, visual, or oral presentations. Simply, my students often do not learn by the typical, standard, expected ways of listening, and practicing. Most of my students need another element, more individualistic, that would aid in better retention of information, sustaining attention, and ultimately, allowing them the sense that they have participated in their own learning experience, and that they have succeeded in learning on their own.

I have learned that my students need more than auditory, visual, or oral information; they learn best when a lesson involves tactile, kinesthetic elements.

One of the activities the students absolutely love is using the school iPad to video-record scenes and dialogues, re-creating scenes from the Medieval European cities and farms. Then they'd edit their scenes using the school computers. The students work so hard on these projects, and I usually get 100% participation from the class.

My Project

My students learn best when they are involved kinesthetically, using movement and working in groups to create something cooperatively. I've learned that with Social Studies, there is a rich array of context-building exercises, such as having students act out scenes using the research of primary sources and their own imagination. In my 7th grade class, the students are learning about the life of Medieval Europe.

After they're done with recording, we would walk to the school computer lab and begin the tedious process of editing.

And sometimes the lab is booked already, so my students have to wait at least a week to continue the editing.

My students would really appreciate having a great, top of the line MacBook Pro in the classroom, so they can edit their videos whenever they want to. And the laptop would be equipped with so many more options that would allow and encourage creativity and imagination.
