This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

MH Elementary school is a Title 1 Montessori school in North Charleston, South Carolina. Hursey Elementary is a school-wide Title I school based on our percentage of students on free/reduced lunch. This is a federally funded program. These funds are used to reduce class size and ensure appropriate resources are available to each student. The school has a diverse student body that serves students from Pre-k through eighth grade. There are about 360 students attending Hursey Elementary.

The mission of Malcolm C Hursey Elementary/Middle School is to develop invested relationships between students, staff, families, and the community: to create a child centered, hands on invitational prepared environment where all students are high achievers and act responsibly as global citizens; to learn together in a professional learning community; to provide a positive climate and culture, where respect for self and others through grace and courtesy and a passion for learning are felt, heard and seen.

My Project

My goal is to transition Hursey Elementary's traditional media center into a modern and effectively utilized learning commons that will become the hub of the school!

The materials on this list will allow my students to become 21st century learners.

The furniture will provide a comforting environment that promotes literacy and cooperative learning. I plan to have a children's area and a juvenile/young adult area. The games, arts and craft supplies, puzzles, and blocks will be used in makerspaces, which promote creativity and STEM skills. My students will use these spaces and materials daily to grow academically, socially, and intellectually. Teachers will also be able to use these materials in their own classroom on a daily basis.
