Students from our school have a variety of economic backgrounds with nearly 60% receiving free or reduced lunch. The school population is approximately 35% minority, with about 50 ELL students. Our school is one of four high schools in our district with about 1,500 students. Currently, the district using a hybrid schedule.
Our students have been involved in a variety of engineering challenges, including the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam 2018.
My students enjoy working with their hands. Many students are part of the FIRST Robotic team. They spend a significant time volunteering and giving back to the local community. They are also working to develop a clean water solution for a village in Kenya.
My Project
The project is about the application of force. From using clamps to hold things down, hold them up, pressing things together or torquing to a predetermined specification, these items are all about the force, the application that is.
Using an arbor press to press two pieces of material together will use math to determine how much force needs to be applied and using a torque wrench to torque a bolt to a predetermined specification will also use the application of math to determine the amount of force that needs to be applied.
The project also includes the use of clamps to be used on the drill press to hold the vise in place and thin parallels that are using in the milling machine to hold material even in the vise.
