We are a 6th grade Math class in Sumter, South Carolina. Located in a high poverty area, we do not always have the resources that we need to enrich learning experiences. Students often enter my class two or more years below grade level in mathematics, but they are a great group of kids and ready to learn!
I try to show them that math can be engaging and fun by incorporating real world learning opportunities and meaningful mathematical experiences.
My students love to be engaged in mathematics through hands-on learning experiences and technology.
The Power Pen Math Quiz cards and pens will make a difference in my math classes by allowing students to practice their math facts, especially multiplication, division, fractions, and more! Having fact fluency is half the battle when it comes to math. The Tangrams will allow students to manipulate math by creating art, but even more importantly, observing how smaller shapes create larger shapes. They will also be able to use them in calculating composite figures.
You have the ability help many students gain a better understanding for many math skills and increase their academic achievement.
Being able to see math in different ways allows students to gain a better understanding for the process, but it also gives them an abstract view as well. Sometimes, all they need is a little extra exposure and a fun way to learn, to help change their mindset to an "I can do math" way of thinking!
