Math Learning at a Distance - Making Models Meaningful

My Students

When we walked out of our classrooms on March 6 for spring break, my students and I had little idea how our world and learning dynamic was about to change. The good news is that our school was already at a ratio of Chromebooks to students that allowed students to check out the devices as we moved to an at-a-distance learning model. The difficulty is that instruction from a distance demanded a new style of communicating and demonstrating.

My Project

The Wacom Drawing Tablet is the device that will allow me to present more legibly to my students in this increasingly digitized world. When we discovered that our district would be moved unexpectedly into a "learning at a distance" model, my immediate thought was the need for a virtual whiteboard and a more effective input device than the traditional mouse. I knew the challenges of drawing with a mouse, and I knew that I needed to be able to provide virtual examples effectively as we worked in this new situation.

Since this sudden and dynamic educational shift, I have become more skilled at using programs such as Paint to demonstrate math problems for my students while using Google Hangouts and creating video tutorials, but my dexterity for drawing with a mouse is limited, even with a pen mouse provided by a colleague - a drawing tablet will enable my students with special needs to make more sense of examples as I present more clearly.

I have produced frequent tutorial videos for my students as I address common errors and as I highlight interesting questions during our time in the virtual classroom. I have also interacted through screen sharing with my virtual whiteboard. With the uncertainty of the instructional dynamics for the coming year, this model may continue to be a necessity. However, the drive to dive into virtual instruction has opened doors for me to be more effective in providing students with learning disabilities greater access to instruction on a year-round basis. Imagine being able to review a lesson on your own schedule as you work on an assignment, recover from days missed due to illness, or prepare for a semester exam! The tablet will support learning in and out of the classroom setting.
