Help me give my students Califone headphones to hear math questions, Califone computer mice to do math problems, Subtraction flashcards to practice math facts, and a Scandisk player and JBL speaker to hear math songs.
The students' home lives range from homeless to a stay at home parent in a single family home. We are a large elementary school of about 680 and growing. My students come from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. Some are first-generation Americans and others are born in various countries. They speak a multitude of languages including Russian, Hindi, Marathi, Vietnamese, Kannada, Gujarati, Arabic, Chinese, Modern Hebrew, and Tamil in addition to English. They love learning about each other's cultures. They love to talk and interact with each other.
They have a lot of excitement about learning new and exciting things.
There are many different levels of ability in all areas of learning. Some struggle with math or reading and others have been accepted in the talented, gifted program. Some are just learning to speak and understand English. Students often move in from other countries throughout the school year. Students also move away when their housing situations change or parents move to different jobs. Last year there was about 30% turn over. My students are excellent in making new or shy students feel welcomed while learning new school expectations.
My Project
All students learn in different ways. Our class has many students working on learning English and learning to read. Many students need to hear the directions and see examples to understand. The headphones will help this happen without bothering the students around them. It also helps students learning a language to understand and hear math problems. Some students who struggle with using the mouse pad need to use a mouse to drop and drag to answer math problems. The disk player and speaker will allow students to hear songs to count by twos, threes, fives, and tens and well as learning other math concepts. The students will use the flashcards to help each other learn math facts. All of these supplies will help students better learn math using a multisensory approach which will greatly enhance student learning. Since students have multiple ways to learn and practice math they will be more engaged in their learning.
