Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are the perfect representation of America. They are beyond diverse and strive to make a better life. Many come from a low socioeconomic status, which increases the obstacles they must overcome just to get an education. Everyone has personal battles to overcome, but some of what our students overcome daily would lead many adults to giving up.
One such obstacle is financial support.
I work with students who are currently studying Pre-Calculus. The class is heavily reliant on TI-83 calculators. The families cannot afford the calculator. Their grades are now suffering because the calculators available are not accurately calculating the equations. By purchasing the calculators, they will be able to reach full potential.
My Project
The math concepts covered in Pre-Calculus are heavily reliant on an advanced calculator. The calculator is a TI-83 model. Without it, the student is using a non graphing calculator, which leads to technical errors. While these students can do the work by hand, the tests need to be completed in a limited amount of time. By completing it by hand, or double checking the work of the non-graphing calculator, they are then unable to complete the test. They have the ability to earn an A, but the lack of resources is inhibiting the ability to reach their full potential. By providing this calculator, they will be able to earn the grade they are so motivated to obtain, an A.
