The majority of my students come from a rural community with high poverty. Nearly 60% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Many of my male students struggle to make connections between what they are asked to do in the classroom and what they see as "the real world." This disconnect often causes their lack of engagement in class and results in them falling behind their peers.
Although my students are economically disadvantaged, they are gifted with working man's hands and love being able to create and build.
They love to discover and shine when others notice their efforts. I want to take their talents and incorporate them into our English curriculum through the use of manipulatives. In this classroom we will build relationships and trust to help students discover their strengths which in turn will help them to be successful.
These materials such at the magnet strips and sticker paper will help my students interact with grammar by making it visible. They will be able to manipulate words and sentences to increase their writing and reading skills. The Vis A Vis markers will allow them to annotate passage of laminated text to deepen their analytical skills while the lamination allows me to use the resources with future groups.
Utilizing manipulatives will allow me to keep students hands busy while engaging their brains to help motivate them towards success.
This particular group of students have had very little success or motivation.
